visit the horses

By Adriana Barker

pear-green, dew-soaked grass
stretches in every direction, streaked
with tall fences serving to keep
the wild spirits inside.

young caramel colts
prance and whinny,
nicker and shove –
their dance speaks joy
in each hoof-step.

touch their velvet noses,
lay a soft hand on their silky backs.
gaze into their deep elixir eyes.

look at the way their manes
are like flowing grass,
their tails like waterfalls.

they speak to each other
with their bodies –
occasionally the snap of teeth.

sometimes, these boyish colts
spook and run –
wind and thunder over the pasture.

watch the way their bodies move
and think maybe God shaped them
out of a dust-storm.
