Hey-yo! This is the art editor, Samantha Grody. Time to update on important things going on at Hope College. Though you may already be aware of these events, it’s always nice to be reminded about the great opportunities on campus.
Artistic Telephone
Essentially self-explanatory this movement involves artists playing telephone by responding to works of other artists. For example, a painter responds to a poem, then a composer creates a piece of music inspired just by the painting, then a choreographer creates a dance just to the music, and a poet responds to just the dance. This is a simple and short example, but illustrates the general process of artistic telephone. This project was done on Mackinaw Island this summer and is being brought to Hope College! The goal is to facilitate collaborative pieces between students and professors or groups of students and plans are to begin the project in January of 2015. Art Exhibitions
The annual juried student art show will be exhibiting from Friday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 23 in the De Pree Art Gallery. The guest juror this year is Paul Amenta, the founder and curator of SiTE:LAB in Grand Rapids. As stated on the Hope College website for the student show, Amenta creates “pop-up installations in unique architectural environments. His curatorial work with SiTE:Lab earned the “nomadic” arts organization “Outstanding Venue Juried Award” given out by ArtPrize.”
Take Back the Mic
Don’t forget to support important public discussion and awareness and submit your artistic pieces regarding gender and sexuality to takebackthemic@gmail.com. All forms of creative expression will be considered, and submissions must be emailed in by October 31 (today).The event itself will be on November 20th!
Jack Ridl Visiting Writing Series (jrvws)
The next visiting writer coming to Hope College is Adrian Matejka. Taken from the official Jack Ridl Visiting Writer Series website, “Adrian Matejka is the author of three collections of poetry. His most recent collection, The Smoke, won the 2013 Ainsfield-Wolf Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry and the National Book Award in Poetry.” He will have a Q & A session on Thursday, November 13, at 3:30 p.m. in the Fried-Hemenway Auditorium in Martha Miller. Later, at 7:00 p.m., he will have a reading in Winants Auditorium in Graves.
Opus Soup
While still a ways away, Opus Soup is an exciting and important event to write down and remember. Come hear about the works accepted into the Fall 2014 edition of Opus and pick up your copy. On Thursday, December 4, Opus Soup will take place in the Fried-Hemenway Auditorium in Martha Miller at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided after in room 158.
As a small side note, autumn is a great time for poetry (in my opinion). It brings out the poet or artist in all of us. Take some time to stop and appreciate the beauty of Hope, of nature, of the world. Write a poem, paint, or just meditate and appreciate. Create something for yourself.
