Alone in the Night: A Villanelle
You drive alone into the night,
She would have said you go too fast,
but life is short and burns so bright.
No one understands you quite
like She does – but that’s in the past.
You drive alone into the night.
You don’t know why you put up a fight,
no good things seem to last.
But life is short and burns so bright.
The highway is empty, no cars in sight.
As you round the bend you press the gas.
You drive alone into the night.
All you see is yellow light;
you never hear the crash.
You drove alone into the night.
Your life was short but burned so bright.
